The High Fens region (Hautes Fagnes / Hohes Venn) was important during the Second World War mainly because of its role in the Battle of the Bulge (Ardennes Offensive), the last major German offensive on the Western Front.
After Germany invaded Belgium in May 1940, the area was occupied and incorporated into Nazi Germany together with the Eupen-Malmedy region; during the Battle of the Bulge (December 1944 – January 1945), fighting took place in and around the High Fens as Allied and German forces competed for control of key routes through the Ardennes.
